Preventive & Wellness Care With An Individualized Approach

Every pet is unique and deserves an individual approach to their health. Instead of a one-size-fits-all methodology, Towne Park Veterinary Care Center prioritizes wellness for each stage of a pet’s life so they can age gracefully. Puppies and kittens have different needs than adult and senior dogs and cats. As such, we take extra care and time to pursue a lifelong strategy that supports each life stage.

Prevention Is the Key

We follow the guideline established by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) regarding vaccination protocols and screening. Open communication with pet owners is crucial to the prevention of disease, and we’re always happy to answer questions or address concerns.

Puppy and Dog Care

Rapid growth occurs in puppies between birth and 6–9 months of age. The adult life stage is split between young adult (3–4 years of age) and mature adult (6–8 years of age). Depending on the breed and size of the dog, their senior years may begin around age 7–9. Large breeds age faster than small breeds.

Until a puppy is fully vaccinated (about 16 weeks old), we will need to see them every 3–4 weeks to complete their personalized vaccine protocols, deworming, screening, and parasite prevention. We will make recommendations for their spay/neuter procedure, microchip, nutrition, training, and exercise requirements.

Annual exams, screening and testing for disease, along with monitoring weight and behavior assessments are essential markers for healthy aging. We prefer to see senior dogs every 6 months for blood work and other screenings as a vital step toward disease prevention.

Kitten and Cat Care

Kittens should be examined shortly after adoption to ensure they are parasite-free and on the right path toward lifelong health. Core vaccines are important for kittens in the first year, and other non-core vaccinations will be based on their lifestyle and environment.

Like puppies, it is crucial to have kittens spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date with vaccinations and parasite prevention medication.

There are four distinct life stages in the life of a feline. Kitten (birth to 1 year), young adult (1–6 years), mature adult (7–10 years), and senior (10 and over). Over the age of 7, we recommend two wellness exams per year in order to identify age-related issues, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes, and arthritis.
